Phantom Bay

PHANTOM BAY Bremen-based band Phantom Bay pairs hardcore punk with melodic hooks. Formed in spring 2020 by Michael Hanser (vocals, guitar), Laurin Rutgers (bass), and Yannic Arens (drums), the band is set to release their debut self-titled LP in early 2022 via Krod Records. Members of Phantom Bay were previously active in New Native, the deadnotes, and Casually Dressed. On their debut album, Bremen-based band Phantom Bay offers a modern take on hardcore punk. The band delivers 11 melodic, fast, and short punk songs, which explore themes of frustration and regret. Its members are no strangers to the European alternative music scene: Hanser as vocalist/guitarist for defunct rock act New Native, Arens as a drummer for the deadnotes, while Rutgers playing guitar for Casually Dressed. In hopes of reviving 2000’s styled hardcore punk, Hanser wrote and recorded demos of the album in early 2020. Joined by friends Rutgers and Arens, the band formed quickly, squeezing in rehearsals amidst COVID-19 outbreaks. Whenever numbers dropped, the band met in Bremen to rehearse, finishing the album within four weekends. Clocking in at 25 minutes total, the album’s songwriting is concise, straightforward, and catchy, despite avoiding classical verse-chorus structures. Lyrically, the songs explore themes of frustration and regret. Hanser adds: “Lyric-writing for me is intuitive, non-analytical. I come up with phrases that work with the music sonically, and make sense of them afterwards. Once I have the key phrases of a song, I re-write and edit very deliberately. That’s the most time-consuming part.” “Phantom Bay” is set for release on April 22, 2022 via Krod records, and will be available on two vinyl variants, and all digital platforms.
